Perhaps the biggest appeal of loft beds for kids is that they can be customized to fit not only the space available, but the interests and tastes of the child.  Loft bed plans can be modified to suit your needs, and this is a terrific benefit because you can incorporate or work with the features in the room, such as windows, nooks, crannies, corners, or even a big open floor plan that needs to be shared among children.  This has a very practical purpose: you don’t want to design and build a bed that your child cannot easily get in or out of, nor do you want it to block the flow and floor space of the room.

Creating your own loft bed plans or modifying a set of plans allows you to choose a bed that will fit the room, its features, and most importantly, the child.  If you choose to buy loft bed plans, make sure you choose sets that include multiple variations that are possible so you can get the customized look and feel you want.  Safety is the first priority but also look for the ease of incorporating the features you want, whether it is a loft bed with a desk underneath, or L-shaped bunk beds.

Building loft beds themselves is not particularly difficult for the DIY (Do-It-Yourself) enthusiast, but choosing the right loft bed plans can be!  Choose carefully, and your child will have her dream room in no time.

Measurements Shown for a Typical Loft Bed

not send her off in style?  Loft beds for dorms are a perfect space-saving, stylish solution.

You can find great loft bed plans that require a floor space of only 48 x 78 inches with a ceiling height of 8 feet; these measurements will accommodate a standard twin sized mattress.  This fits the measurements you will find in a dorm room, but when you create a loft, you can tuck a study or storage space underneath the bed and free up a lot of room.  Every inch matters in a dorm room!

You will need:

  • 1 – piece of 4 x 8 inch thick plywood.
  • 4 – 4 x 4 x 8 feet long hardwood or pine posts.
  • 3 – 2 x 6 x 8s.
  • 3 – 1 x 3.5 inch by 8 foot lumber boards.
  • Assorted bolts and screws.

Make a simple rectangle box from the 2×6 lumber; cut two of the 2×6 boards to a length of 78 inches.  Cut the other 2×6 boards into 2 pieces measuring 37 inches long.

Cut a sheet of plywood to fit this box.  Use 3-inch drywall screws to attach the 2x6s together at the corners, and secure the plywood with 1 5/8 inch drywall screws every two feet.

The 4x4s will be your posts. Make sure they are all the same length – 44 inches. Keep in mind that you want to maintain a 3 foot ceiling clearance when the loft is set up.

Position two of the posts 78 inches apart and parallel.  Tip the platform box up onto the posts and drill 2 1/4 inch holes through each 2×6 and halfway into the center of the 4x4s.  Use 4 inch 3/8 diameter lag bolts to secure the platform to the posts, and then repeat on the other side.

If you want to add a ladder, use 1 inch thick lumber that has treads about 10 to 12 inches apart.  You can attach it to the platform with screws for security.

The great thing about this these loft bed plans is that the beds can be assembled ahead of time, and then re-assembled in minutes when your child is moving into her dorm room.  The space savings are tremendous.
